This paper discusses interaction techniques — person–machine conversation through computer input and output equipment — and their implementation in courseware on aesthetics theory which has won several awards. Such interaction in a multi-media teaching system can arouse students’ interest and develop their initiative.

To implement interaction techniques successfully, one needs to start by focusing on the following design aspects:

  1. The database
In the past, interaction was concerned with important and difficult points in teaching and later on with points of information, but now the focus has shifted to databases. With the key information installed on a database, students can find all they need for learning, testing, or even searching for information, with the click of a mouse.

  2. A convenient and simple operating interface
For student convenience, the style of the operating interface must be consistent, with buttons such as Menu, Music Control, Back and Esc being essential.

  3. Rich resources
The knowledge of experienced teachers is collected and produced in a module, with consultation and interactive control provided. Rich resources can provide students and teachers with opportunities for online discussion and email communication.
